Smoke Alarms

Tis the season to check smoke detectors. Every year it is important to change the battery in your smoke detectors to make sure the are functional. If you have hard wired or battery operated smoke detectors more than eight years old they need to be replaced too. It only takes a few minutes and can save lives.

When I install new smoke detectors I buy new ones with a ten year battery, either for backup or the main power source. You will most likely need to replace the trim ring as brands differ and that just involves a couple screws. If you only have one or two in your home it is time to bring it up to code. Every sleeping area and each level need a smoke alarm and they should be interconnected (either wireless or wire). I will show the locations and installation in the project section soon.

Smoke detectors wear out after 8-10 years, when you replace them they need to be disposed of in a safe manner and not tossed into the trash. They contain hazardous materials that need to be dealt with properly, please check your local municipality for directions and disposal places.

For a few dollars you can have a safe home for you and your loved ones. As projects go this is simple and inexpensive making it a great way to start the New Year.
